David B. Smith

Bio

David B. Smith, who lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, makes images and sculptural installations to explore fantasy, memory, loss, and commodity in American culture. He has developed a systematic yet intuitive approach to selecting and processing cultural artifacts into playful arrangements. Using this pseudo programming-code, he gains access to the back-end of cultural memory. In his immersive works, he reveals, reprograms and re-generates forms that occupy the space between remembering, forgetting, and imagining and that vacillate between the real and the virtual.

Since receiving an MFA from Bard College in 2007, Smith has curated 15 shows and shown in 45, at spaces such as Exit Art, David Zwirner Gallery, PS1, and NADA Miami. He has been awarded residencies at The Waterpod, Harold Arts, and BOFFO, and his work has been discussed in the New York Times, Washington Post, and Miami New Times among others. His music project, Doom Trumpet, has performed in places like Invisible Dog, The Knitting Factory, and the International Center of Photography.
