It’s as if with line from the loom -
Weaver knife and weaver brush
Stitch color thick into
Diamond and terrace, into
Planes black as wool tied by
Stripe and cross, all falling in
The warp and weft of weave,
Patchwork tricksters playing ‘till
Depths fill with ring and bell
Purple against the harvest moon.

Tuck stargazer ‘neath
These tapestries, fathomed full
In phase and in loop, and
Watch what the medicine man
Paints from his compass rose.

Haw Contemporary is pleased to present Full Phase, Eric Sall’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition comprises large scaled paintings Sall produced during his recent residency at the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program in New Mexico. Essentially abstract, Sall’s expressive canvases evoke references to real world imagery and reflect his fascination with scale, texture, color, surface, and process.

Eric Sall received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute (1999) and his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University (2006). His works have been shown across the United States as well as in Seoul, South Korea. He has attended the Marie Walsh Sharpe Space Program in Brooklyn, NY, the LMCC Workspace residency in New York, NY, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program in Roswell, NM, and the Yale Summer Program of Music and Art in Norfolk, CT. Sall is the recipient of an Art in Architecture commission from the General Services Administration, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, a Virginia Museum of Fine Art Fellowship, and a Charlotte Street Fund Award. Sall will soon begin a residency with the Tulsa Artist Fellowship through the George Kaiser Family Foundation in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
